Jewellery in 925 silver is also called sterling. Éfémer’s silver jewellery is hallmarked to authenticate the quality of the metal. The hallmark 925 for 1,000 (925/°°) means that the jewellery is manufactured using an alloy containing 925 mils of silver and small quantities of copper or zinc. Silver is a malleable precious metal that must be alloyed with a harder metal to keep it from losing its shape or getting marked too easily. The 925/°° hallmark is a guarantee of quality.

Highly durable, Éfémer’s silver jewellery is generally untreated, without rhodium anti-tarnish processing. Silver tarnishes naturally by yellowing and then blackening in contact with air and light. A jewellery box is not an effective way to prevent this chemical reaction.

General care for your silver jewellery

Do:

  • Wear your 925 silver jewellery as often as possible. Keep it on when you wash (unless it has stones) in order to maintain its shining finish and avoid having to polish it.
  • Keep your jewellery pieces separately in closed plastic bags to prevent them from rubbing against other jewellery, getting scratched and tarnishing too quickly.
  • Wipe the jewellery gently with a cloth and remove the air from the bag before placing your jewellery inside.
  • Make your jewellery look new again with Silvo™, a product sold in the household products aisle. It will gently repolish the silver surface.
  • For regular, gentle maintenance, use a silver cloth moistened with a tarnish-removing product.
  • Clean fine chains or links with silver-cleaning liquids.

You can obtain a silver cloth and silver-cleaning liquids at the Éfémer boutique.

Avoid:

  • Contact with chlorine (it blackens silver very quickly, but this can be remedied), abrasive surfaces, chemical products, or iodine and mercury.
  • Spas and swimming pools.

Silver jewellery with stones

Gems such as mother-of-pearl, amber, onyx and turquoise are generally mounted with glue. Glues lose their adhesiveness on contact with water and soap and stones can become unglued. Some stones, such as turquoise and amber, are more delicate and react poorly to soap. Ultimately, all stones are fragile, natural materials, so care is required.

Do:

  • Whenever you wash, remove any jewellery with stones, especially rings.

Avoid:

  • Cleaning with liquids intended for silver, which are too corrosive for gemstones.
  • Household work, gardening, vigorous sports and hard shocks.
  • Immersion in saltwater, which could discolour and weaken the stones.
For jewellery with gemstones, the best protection against tarnishing is to wear the jewellery, regularly use a silver cloth and keep the jewellery in a closed plastic bag when it is not being worn.
